East Los Angeles

East Los Angeles is home to over 120,000 residents. As a targeted PrepareSoCal vulnerable community, East Los Angeles ranks 22 in vulnerability and is interestingly the base of Los Angeles county’s Emergency Operations Center. Following are resiliency-building efforts by the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region to strengthen partnerships and implement community coalitions that enable East Los Angeles to live up to its motto – “Pride in the Past, Faith in the Future.”

East Los Angeles

The Red Cross Los Angeles Region met with key community leadership, elected and government officials including: Henry Perez, CEO Inner City Struggle, Martin Castro, CEO Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF), Grace Gonzalez, Executive Director Volunteers in East Los Angeles (VELA), Joseph Martinez, Field Representative to County Supervisor Hilda Solis and Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Captain Steve Biagini, East LA Station. The

Los Angeles Region compiled a contact list of 120 individuals at more than 35 organizations.

East LA community leaders informed Red Cross that the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign must come second to building trust in the community. Therefore, outreach to date has included: Disney Pillowcase Program, PrepareU, and community outreach booths following masses at neighborhood festivals and at local health fairs.

Updates

The East Los Angeles community coalition has continued to strive toward new goals by increasing individual preparedness by coordinating and delivering preparedness workshops and trainings.
The focus was on basic preparedness trainings and presentations, CPR/First Aid classes, home fire safety events, and the Disney Pillowcase project presentations. Notable events and activities included marching as a coalition in the Mexican Independence Day Parade, teaching hands only CPR trainings, fostering Red Cross Clubs at two local high schools, free smoke alarm installation events, and providing preparedness information at Red Cross booths during community events.
