The first step in preparing for an emergency is simply to talk. Get chatty. Discuss the kinds of emergencies that are likely to happen in your area with your family, friends and co-workers. Here’s what to talk about:

  • Connecting. Make sure your most important people know how to connect with each other – who will you rely on and who will rely on you? Pick an out of state contact to be a hub for information.
  • Becoming a team. Assign roles to family members (Who will grab the emergency kit? Who will get the pet? Who will monitor the radio for updates?)
  • Establishing two meeting places. One near your home, one outside your neighborhood in case you’re not all together and can’t return home.
