With Los Angeles County’s population at just under 10 million, more people than ever before face the possibility of being in an earthquake or other major disaster.
During and after a disaster, the Red Cross and our partners are dedicated to helping those in need. Since most disasters are unexpected, The Red Cross must be prepared every day and so must you; assistance may be delayed in times of disaster. How prepared or Red Cross Ready you are, can directly affect how well your family copes and survives a disaster.

The American Red Cross is a volunteer-led, humanitarian organization that helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. When the inevitable strikes, it’s often Red Cross volunteers who provide relief to victims.
Additional Los Angeles-Specific Resources/Facts:
- The L.A. County Emergency Alert System will broadcast information on KNX 1070 am and KFI 640 am.
- The Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles will broadcast information about shelters on KNX 1070 am.
- L.A. County has a “reverse 911″ system. In the event of an evacuation or disaster affecting your area, 911 will call to alert you. Your landlines are already registered on this system. To register cell phone numbers or your email address, go to alert.lacounty.gov.
- In an emergency, call 911. For non-emergency information about city services, like police and fire departments, call 311. For information about local health and human services, call 211.
- To find your nearest fire station, go to LAFD.org.
- Go to the City of L.A. Emergency Management website readyla.org, enter your zip code, and find your nearest fire and police stations, hospitals and utilities.
