American Red Cross Training for CERT members

These opportunities are only open for individuals who have already completed CERT Level 1 certification.
Level 2 – Shelter Fundamentals training
The American Red Cross offers CERT Level 2 in-person Shelter Fundamental classes countywide. This training will be offered on a quarterly basis, in person, free of charge. Please refer to the Training Calendar in Volunteer Connection for the schedule of upcoming training opportunities.
Level 3 – Emergency Medical Responder course
The American Red Cross offers the Level 3 Emergency Medical Responder course, which includes 60+ hours of training, free of charge as long as you commit to working on a First Aid Team at the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena. Thank you for your patience while we finalize our class schedule for the coming months. Please check the Training Calendar in Volunteer Connection beginning in late July for the course schedule.
How to Sign Up
Step 1: Create a Volunteer Connection Account
- Create Red Cross ID*
- Fill out an application form, which requires you to read and agree to Red Cross policies, authorize a background check**, and verify your email address.
- Note that there is no obligation to continue on as a Red Cross volunteer, but a Volunteer Connection Account, including background check, is required to receive this level of training administered by the Red Cross.
Step 2: Register for Courses
- You will receive an email notification once your background check has been processed and your account has been activated. Please note that while background checks are typically processed within 24 hours of submission, in rare cases it may take up to a few weeks for the results to come back.
- After your background check has cleared and your Volunteer Connection Account is fully activated, please login to Volunteer Connection to access our In-Person Training Calendar and register for classes. More classes will become available as they are scheduled.
Would you like to respond locally or deploy nationally?
While CERT members are under no obligation to continue as Red Cross volunteers after taking the above courses, if you do wish to put your skills to further use we invite you to take the training to become a local Disaster Action Team Member or a nationally qualified Red Cross Disaster Responder.
We have five 24/7 local response teams that respond daily in the in the Los Angeles Region. We also deploy dozens of volunteers to national disasters annually. Our Disaster Cycle Services team also has volunteer opportunities in recovery casework and preparedness education. Minimum commitment is 20 hours per year.
