About

With just over 100,000 residents, Van Nuys arguably straddles one of the westside’s most significant arteries to the San Fernando Valley – the 405 Freeway. This community is home to the busiest general aviation airport in the world (Van Nuys Airport) and seat of political service. The following are resiliency-building efforts by the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region to strengthen partnerships and implement community coalitions that enable this small but mighty city to regain its residential, industrial, and economic bearings following a disaster.

Through the assistance and efforts of local Community Ambassadors, staff and AmeriCorps members, new partnerships were developed and assisted in organizing preparedness presentations such as Map Your Neighborhood and participated in outreach events like National Night Out and Summer Night Lights.

As the Red Cross moves forward building a community coalition, relationships with new contacts including faithbased affiliates as well as non-profits offering essential human services, businesses and first responders to help ensure that Van Nuys has the right representatives providing proper guidance and direction essential to a sustainable preparedness plan. Through coalition development, the Red Cross has increased its level of service to Van Nuys and continues to grow. The Los Angeles Region hosted Map Your Neighborhood facilitator training’s, attended more local events with community outreach booths, and provided critical preparedness education training. The American Red Cross Los Angeles Region has moved to better understand who lives in the community, who works here and how to better tailor its services to meet their diverse needs.

Thanks to the efforts of the Red Cross Los Angeles Region, local leaders are joining in the effort to create a connected community that is increasingly able to bounce back from a disaster. Together we will add shelter space, acquire emergency resources, teach organizations the fundamentals of business continuity and instruct residents on how to survive disasters.
